There’s a story about an agnostic who fell off a steep cliff. About halfway down he caught hold of a bush sticking out of the cliff. There he was hanging, momentarily spared, but still too far from the ground to let go. He began to pray: “Is anybody up there?” He listened intently but there was no answer so he prayed louder. “HEY, IS ANYBODY UP THERE? PLEASE HELP ME!!” A voice answered, “Yes, I’m up here.” The frantic agnostic yelled out, “WHO IS IT?” The voice answered back, “It’s the Lord!” The man yelled back, “IF THAT’S YOU LORD PLEASE HELP ME!!” The Lord calmly spoke, “Will you do what I tell you?” With a desperate plea the man responded, “YES! I’LL DO ANYTHING!! JUST SAVE ME!!” The Lord said, “O.K., let go of the bush and I’ll save you.” There was a long pause as the man looked down at the ground far below. Then the man yelled back, “HEY! IS THERE ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?” There are times that God will say things we don’t want to hear, but this has everything to do with trusting in Him. One of the most valuable keys to successful living is to trust in the Lord with all of your heart, because He knows more about your life and your situation than you do. He always has the right answer for every question and perfect solution for all conditions. Trust is built around knowledge. How do we know God? Through His Word! It works the same way with every relationship. We are known by our words. Every word of God is absolute truth and can be trusted to lean on. There is no wavering or shadow of turning in His word. You must know that God is looking out for you and that He has your best interests at heart. It is solidifying to know that God is very determined to help you with every issue. Again, the key is trust. It’s a fact that we trust those who have a proven track record. They have given us no reason to distrust them. Faithfulness and honesty has been their integrity. We know we can count on them to follow through and we are comfortable with them. There is peace. Their word is their bond. Have you ever had a relationship with someone you knew to be untrustworthy? It’s not a pleasant experience, because it’s difficult to discern between truth and fiction. Who knows what to believe or trash? There is no peace of mind. It wears a person down. Who knows what is about to happen? Many people are on medication and are depressed because of this issue. It is written, “Cursed be the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the Lord…but blessed is the man that trusts in the Lord and whose hope the Lord is” (Jeremiah 17:5-8). The most comforting news is that God is not a man that He should lie. He is the absolute truth through and through. “Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him” (Proverbs 30:5).
